"Iconic DC Lesbian Bar Phase One Closes After 45 Years"

Reviewed by Todd Vandersline / DClocal.org

Phase One, a popular lesbian bar on DC's Barracks Row, was opened in 1971 by Allen Carroll and his partner Chris Jansen in an 1890s commercial building. Over the years, it became a social hub for various groups like women’s softball team members, college students, and feminists. The bar welcomed patrons of all ages, from 20-somethings to women in their 60s and 70s.

After nearly 50 years in operation, Phase One closed its doors in 2016. The site is now part of the DC’s LGBTQ+ History Tour and was documented by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) in 2016 as part of its DC LGBTQ Nightlife project. The bar holds a significant place in the history of LGBTQ+ spaces in Washington, DC.
