Capital Pride Celebrates Juneteenth with Special Flag Design

by Katherine Murphy / DClocal.org

Today Capital Pride in Washington, D.C. is honoring and celebrating Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19th, 1865 when enslaved African-Americans in Texas were declared free, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth now symbolizes freedom, justice, and liberation.

The Juneteenth flag, designed by activist Ben Haith, is red and blue with a white star in the middle. In an interview with The Boston Globe in 2022, Haith explained that he chose red, white, and blue to recognize the connection between enslaved Black people and the nation's history. Haith stated that since Black ancestors helped build the country, the flag should reflect those colors.

The white star on the flag represents the lone star of Texas, considered the birthplace of Juneteenth. Surrounding this symbol is a secondary star that Haith describes as a "nova burst," signifying a new star.
